Finding Joy in Waiting: A Review of ‘The Joy of the Inbetween’

I’ve been a fan of Ashley Hetherington for a while now, so when she wrote ‘The Joy of the Inbetween’, I knew I would get it eventually. When the book finally arrived, it was even prettier in person. I just love the cover, the colour, everything, which just makes reading it better. Content obviously matters more than the design, but in this case, both are equally good.

‘The Joy of the Inbetween’ is a 100-day devotional, so by reading a chapter a day, it takes a few months, but it is so worth the read. Each chapter starts with a bible verse and ends with a prayer, which is such a nice setup and really encourages you to spend more time with God. Each chapter also contains two reflection questions to help you realise what may need to change in your life, but also bring you closer to God.

This book actually sat on my shelf for several months before I got around to reading it, but I believe it was God’s timing. When I first got the book, it wasn’t really relevant to me, but by the time I started reading it, I was entering into a waiting season, which is what the book is all about. Trusting God in a waiting season can be difficult, especially when you don’t know how long it will last. Still, this devotional was a great encouragement and comfort to me, and maybe it didn’t bring me closer to God, but I’m definitely not further away from God because of it. This book reminded me of how much God works in unseen ways and how we will always need Him.

I’d say ‘The Joy of the Inbetween’ is definitely targeted at Christians in a waiting season, but anyone could read it. I certainly recommend it. It could make a great present for someone struggling in their relationship with God because it is so easy to read but full of enriching content. The short chapters and once-a-day setup make it a good choice for those who wouldn’t consider themselves readers, either.
