The difference between ministry and mission is that ministry is service to believers and mission is service to those who don’t believe in Jesus. Fulfilling our mission is the fifth purpose out of the five purpose God gave us.
KEY VERSE
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 NIV
Our mission is one that is shared between every believer yet is unique to each person. We all have a responsibility to fulfil this mission but each one of us has a different role within it.
WHY IS MISSION IMPORTANT?
IT’S A CONTINUATION OF JESUS MISSION
The mission is to introduce people to God just like Jesus did. His mission became ours; He saved us so we could help save others. Jesus told us several times to go and make disciples, it is our great commission.
Mission isn’t optional. Jesus holds us responsible for the unbelievers around us (Ezekiel 3:18). Mission is important because it can save lives.
IT’S A PRIVILEGE
Mission is a privilege; it gives us the honour of working with God as well as being His representatives (2 Corinthians 6:1). It’s our privilege to share how Jesus is our salvation and how through Him we have a new family, a promised home in Heaven and purpose. It is a privilege to show others how God has been working in us and through us.
IT’S THE GREATEST THING WE CAN DO
Sharing the truth is an act of kindness, perhaps one of the greatest acts of love there is. It’s worth more than all the money in the world because a life is greater than wealth.
It would be foolish not to tell others about the great gift we have been given and how they can receive it too. To withhold the path to peace, forgiveness and eternal life is criminal. Mission is kindness, it is love at its core.

IT HAS ETERNAL SIGNIFICANCE
Our mission has eternal impact. It has the power to alter someone’s fate, once they might have been doomed to death and separation from God but through mission they can receive the fullness of life forevermore through Jesus. Mission plants the seeds and encourages those seeds to grow with the help of the Lord.
There is nothing more important than helping people build a relationship with God and we should not delay.
“We must do the works of him who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work.” John 9:4 CSB
IT GIVES LIFE MEANING
In time everything will end. This world will expire along with everything in it. What we do with our lives can seem meaningless in the face of this truth but those who know God have a future of hope to look forward with our Creator in Heaven. We have purpose on this earth that will help us prepare for eternity and that gives our life meaning.
Mission gives our life meaning and if we do not fulfil it, we waste our lives (Acts 20:24). So, let’s make an effort to serve because the effects of our mission will last forever, even if it is only one person we help save.
IT’S CONNECTED TO THE END OF THE WORLD
“This good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed to all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14 CSB
The end will not come until every person God wants to hear the truth has heard it. This is not possible without mission. Fulfilling our mission is important and we must make the effort to succeed for the salvation of others.
THE COST OF MISSION
Sacrifice is the price for mission. Even Jesus had to sacrifice in order for the mission to be fulfilled (Luke 22:42). We may not have to sacrifice ourselves quite like he did, but we do have to sacrifice our desires and plans so that God’s will can be done. Nothing matters more than succeeding in our mission so that as many people as possible can be saved.
