I must admit that as interesting as I found this chapter it didn’t hit me as hard as day 1. But I can see why it would for some people. After all, many people come from broken homes and traumatic backgrounds so it is completely understandable to feel strongly about the key point of this chapter:
YOU ARE NOT AN ACCIDENT
God created this world and us with purpose, and even the things that don’t seem planned are. Children are often called unplanned when the truth is far from it. God designed each of us before this world was created. He formed the path for our parents to meet so that we would exist in the way He designed.
Just because we don’t expect things to happen the way they do doesn’t mean it is the same for God.
KEY VERSE
“I am your Creator. You were in my care even before you were born.” Isaiah 44:2 CEV
It’s crazy to think that God cared for us and knew us before we were conceived before the world existed. It’s unfathomable but we believe it because He told us. Nothing is an accident. No one is an accident. Even if you feel like one, let this truth sink in that you are not an accident. Believe God over the words of people.
WE WERE CREATED BY LOVE TO LOVE
God created us with intention. He created us as a way to express His love. God is love, not love as the world defines it but pure love. It is part of His character.
“God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him” 1 John 4:36 CSB
His love is unconditional and will not fail unlike human love and this is something to be grateful for. It means we can trust Him to be there for us even when no one else is.

WE WERE MADE WITH PURPOSE
I’ve already mentioned that God created us with intention but truthfully it’s more like intentions. One of those was so He can love us but He also created us to have a purpose. For us to go through life with no meaning or purpose means we are not living the way we were designed. Each of us has a unique purpose on this earth but a lot of us just go through the motions of life without realising our true purpose.
This purpose is the reason I started these 40 days of purpose because I no longer want to waste my life doing something that was never intended for me. I want my life to have meaning and purpose.
God brings meaning and purpose into our lives. He is the reason we exist. Life with Him is more fulfilling and peaceful than a life without Him. God doesn’t want us to waste our lives, He wants us to draw near to Him and spend time with Him in the Word so we can discover our unique purpose and live the way He intended.
I said that God created us with intention to give us a purpose but alongside our unique purpose we all have shared purposes which I discussed on day 1 of the 40 days of purpose. These shared purposes are:
- Worship
- Fellowship
- Discipleship
- Ministry
- Outreach
If you want to know more about these purposes take a look at the day 1 post.
WE MATTER TO GOD
God gave us a purpose because He cares about us and we matter to Him. He didn’t want us to waste our lives or give in to the temptations of sin so He provided us with the bible, the roadmap to Him and to purpose.
God loves us so much that we can’t comprehend it.
“Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7 CSB
These verses give us an idea of how much He loves us. He loves us so much He designed us in His image. Not only were we made in His image, but He also gave us an eternal soul.
He wants to live with us, not just in this lifetime but in Heaven too. He designed us to last forever. We may leave our bodies behind when we die but our souls are immortal. Our eternal soul is the reason we may never feel like we truly belong here. We will always want more because we were designed for it.
God cares about every detail of your life. He planned it in detail before we were born.
“I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born.” Jeremiah 1:5 CSB

This specific verse is about the prophet Jeremiah and the purpose that God gave him. But it can also apply to us because, just like Jeremiah, we were also chosen. God chose to create us.
“Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began.” Psalm 139:16 CSB
God knows our past, present and future. He knows what will happen before it happens to us. He has already accounted for our sins and mistakes and wrong directions. He accounted for free will so we don’t need to worry about anything. We just need to trust Him and believe that He has it covered even in the midst of our greatest fears.
No longer do we need to live in shame and disappointment when we sin or make mistakes, He already knows about our actions and that we will turn to Him and repent. What a relief that is, too often I’ve lived in my shame or refused to turn to God out of fear of His disappointment in me. No longer will we live in such lies. Let the light of truth cause the darkness of deceit to flee.
OUR PURPOSE EXISTS BEYOND THIS LIFE
We know God created us to love us and gave us an eternal soul that one day we might live with Him. He wants us to be part of His family.
“The Lord has prepared everything for his purpose – even the wicked for the day of disaster.” Proverbs 16:4 CSB
Without God life truly has no meaning and I’ll probably be saying that until the day I die or the end of the world whichever comes first.
Our purposes in this life serve to prepare us for the next life. The shared purposes I mentioned earlier—four of those we will do in Heaven—will not be necessary anymore; only outreach will be necessary. As for our unique purpose, I cannot say; some things we just have to wait for before we find out.
We obey God in this life to be prepared for what’s to come. That doesn’t necessarily mean Heaven it can also mean whatever life may throw at us next.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 CSB
If you want to know what your true purpose is dive into God’s Word and let Him show you the way. You can also do like me and follow The Purpose Driven Life’s 40 days of purpose. If you do want to know why you are on this earth only God can answer that question so speak to Him, He’s waiting for you. His door is always open. One final note – don’t let fear hold you back from stepping out in faith it is never too late to change.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10 CSB
