Overcoming Anxiety and Trusting God

Life is more than the food we eat and the clothes we wear. It is more than the work we do and the friends we share.

We read in Matthew 6:25 -34 that God considers us to be worth more than birds and wildflowers. Birds are fed despite not sowing or reaping crops. Wildflowers are uniquely beautiful despite not working to make themselves look beautiful. The point is if God provides for these why would He not provide for us whom He considers to be worth more?

We let our doubts and our fears plague our minds with worry and anxiety to the point that we question everything including God himself. We let them cloud the truth which is that God does provide perhaps not always at the time we expect but He does provide because He knows what we need.

God has all of time in His hand, we don’t need to worry about the future or concern ourselves with the past because He is in control and besides each day has enough issues without adding to it.

If you ever find yourself in a place where you’re worrying about having food on the table or warm clothes to wear just remember that God will provide. Speak to Him about it as a way to alleviate your concerns but also be proactive and look for ways to help you in your situation that aligns with scripture.

God provided a lamb for Abraham to sacrifice instead of his son. He provided a way for the Israelites to cross the Red Sea and escape the Egyptians. He provided food and water for them when they were wandering in the desert. He provided a safe haven with Rahab for the Israelite spies. The point is there are so many times in the Bible which speak of God’s provision and He will do the same for you.

When we know God and still hold onto worry it is a sign we don’t trust Him. Take a moment to ask yourself why?

Do you fear what God could do in your life? Or do you fear what might be taken away or not happen? Are you afraid to leave your comfort zone and fully commit yourself to God? Or perhaps you have spent so long listening to the voice in your head that you don’t know how to stop and listen to God.

Whatever it is that makes you mistrust God know that this feeling is not from Him. He loves you and cares for you. His plans will only give you hope, He doesn’t want to harm you. He wants you to seek Him and trust Him. He wants to help you prosper.  Yes, you may feel weak and helpless at times but God can strengthen you with His power.

It is in weakness we see God’s power more clearly.

God wants us to lean on Him. He wants to help us and for us to speak with Him. When we do have worries and anxieties we can bring them to God and He will take that burden from us because He loves us. Whenever we have questions He has the answers, that’s why we have the Bible. He knew we’d have questions and doubts so He gave us the Bible, His living Word to answer our questions and to guide us through life. When we read the Bible, God speaks to us.

We will suffer in this life and face various challenges, it is an unfortunate inevitability but through it all God is with us. He supports us, strengthens us, restores us, encourages us. We can trust Him with all things. We can let go of our worries no matter how hard it feels in the moment.

Let us follow the example that has been set before us by so many. Let us trust God unwaveringly even when we have doubts. Let us be like Abraham who trusted God enough to be led into unknown territory. Let us be like Joseph who never stopped doing good even though his circumstances weren’t. It is not for us to understand all things that is for God alone but it is our job to trust God with our whole heart.

Let us be like David who trusted God but also felt his emotions deeply. Let us rejoice when we are delivered from our trials like he did and give God the praise and honour He deserves. Let us also be grateful for what we do have in the moment and for what God has so lovingly given us that we so often take for granted.

Let’s end this post on a prayer inspired by Psalm 56:3-4.

Dear God,

Forgive me for all the times I have questioned you or doubted your purpose for me. Forgive me for becoming so wrapped up in anxiety that I couldn’t see the truth.

I know that I was afraid to step out in faith, scared to trust you with my life. Please forgive me for that Lord. Now I see clearly, I know that you love me and care for me so much that it hurts you to see me suffer. I know you want to help me and lead me.

Father God, I come before you now in humility and lay all my worries before you. I trust that your plan is good and that even when things get hard you are still in control. No one can stand against you Lord, you are all-powerful.

I know it won’t be easy and I know I will still struggle with control and doubt at times but this time God I will come to you and speak to you and ask for help. I know that I am not in this alone because you are always with me even when I don’t think you are or don’t feel your presence.

Thank you Lord for being patient with me and for leading me to this moment. I am grateful for all you have done for me and look forward to seeing what you will do, in Jesus name, Amen.
