How to Walk by Faith

Faith is powerful, strong enough to move mountains (Matthew 17:20) should the need arise but the faithful road is not an easy one and as Christians we can often find ourselves slipping into sin and making the wrong choices without even realising it. Faith relies on who God is, on Jesus, on the Holy Spirit. It is through the Spirit that Jesus reveals truth to us, the evidence of God’s power and goodness. Through the tests we face and the perseverance we grow stronger (James 1:3).

2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us we need to live by faith and not by sight like Noah did when he built the ark that saved his family and the animals of Earth. Noah listened to God and followed His commands before the flood happened (Hebrews 11:7). We can also take the example of the Israelite army who were promised Jericho would fall on the seventh day of marching around the city which it did (Hebrews 11:30). Or of Moses when the the Egyptians were about to ambush them at the Red Sea and trusted God would get them out of that situation (Exodus 14:15-29).

There are plenty of other examples of people who walked in faith and trusted God in all sorts of situations from Rahab to Daniel and many people since. Just look at the revivals that have happened this year, God is still moving.

So how do we walk by faith?

Surrender

Each day we must submit our desires to God, we must give Him our all (James 4:7). We cannot trust our hearts, our emotions because they are affected by sin and are constantly changing (Proverbs 3:5 and 28:26, Jeremiah 17:9) unlike the truth.

We live in a world that believes in what is seen therefore we must believe in the unseen for it is the unseen that is eternal, what is seen is only temporary (2 Corinthians 4:18).

‘Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’

John 20:29

Remember God’s Promises

He is always with us in all things from the worst of situations to the happiest of moments {Psalm 23:4).

Whatever we ask for in prayer we will receive as long as we believe (Matthew 21:22). This doesn’t mean we can abuse his faithfulness with our selfishness but if it is His will and for good it will be granted.

God is good to all, He has compassion for His creations (Psalm 145:9).

His love endures forever (1 Chronicles 16:34).

He gives strength to us when we are weary and tired, He gives us strength when we are weak (Isaiah 40:29).

God promises that those who seek him lack no good thing (Psalm 34:10).

We can trust in His promises because He is eternally unchanging. The same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:18).

Applying the Word to your Life

We must keep our focus on God and let our lives revolve around Him in every thought and every action (Proverbs 3:6). After all, faith alone will not save us and nor will works alone. It is through grace by faith we are saved and by our actions we show our love to God in gratitude and praise.

‘In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.’

James 2:17

When we live by the Spirit Galatians 5:16 tells us our sinful desires will not be fulfilled and we should make an effort to avoid temptations we know we would easily give in to.

The Lord says we need to guard our hearts, everything we do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). We also need to guard what we have been entrusted with (2 Timothy 1:14), whether it be keeping our family safe or looking after ourselves by eating healthy.

We can’t rely on human wisdom, just look at the narratives in the world right now declaring anything is okay if it makes you happy. We have to rest in God, trust in His power (1 Corinthians 2:5) because if we attempt down the road that tells us do what makes you happy we will find ourselves in a place wondering what could have gone so wrong.

God wants us to come to Him, to spend time with Him. He wants us to ask for help. Luke 17:5 tells us the disciples asked God to grow their faith, so can we ask Him. We can ask for wisdom, discernment, the removal of people who will lead us down the wrong path and more. As long as we believe and do not doubt it will happen, God will answer (James 1:5-8).

Do have an open mind and heart. God is known to work in mysterious and unexpected ways (2 Kings 6: 15-17). It is not possible to always be prepared for how He will work but we can be open and receptive to anything that happens.

Walking by faith will never be easy, sure there will be moments it is but like everything on Earth it is only temporary. It will not be easy but it will be worth it and that’s something worth holding on to. The end of the journey when we will meet the King and see Heaven with our new, transformed eyes. A realm of pure joy awaits.

‘Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.’

1 Peter 1:8
