A question that’s been on my mind lately is how to go all in with God? What does it mean? What does it involve? I’ve seen a few people talking about it and I’ve felt an increasing desire to go all in with God. But how?
My mind tells me going all in with God is simple, it’s following God with all my heart, mind and soul as it says in Deuteronomy 6:5; fully surrendered and obedient to God and His Word. Doubt makes me question the simplicity of going all in with God, so I turn to the Word for truth and confirmation.
What does it mean to go all in with God?
In Matthew 16:24-25 (CSB) Jesus says “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it.”
The one who carries a cross knows there is no return from where they are headed. They know they can’t save themselves. Going all in with God means recognising this truth – we can’t save ourselves, only God can. Our efforts without Him are futile. We must as this verse says deny ourselves. Denying ourselves is to put others first and not indulge our every desire as the world does. It is surrender and obedience to God.
Our only hope lies in Jesus and His resurrection power. His way is the only path to true life, peace and joy. We must walk to our deaths with Jesus. Only with Jesus does our death have meaning and hope. Only with Jesus do we receive eternal life once we die.
In Romans 12 Paul speaks of our true worship which is presenting ourselves as a living sacrifice before God. We can only do this when we are surrendered and obedient. To go all in with God requires our total surrender. We must let go of all we thought we knew and accept the truth of God’s Word. We must be obedient to the Word and apply it in our lives also. Jesus tells us in John 14:15 – “if you love me, you will keep my commands.” Being obedient to God and His commands is showing love to Him.
“Trust in the Lord with all your, heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 CSB
Paul warns us not to conform to society and encourages us to let God’s Word transform and renew our minds. A renewed mind makes it easier to discern God’s will for us and know the truth. Going all in with God requires us to make time to study and meditate on God’s Word and spend time with Him in prayer and worship.
Steadfast, unwavering faith is essential to go all in with God. Life can toss a curveball, it’s filled with highs and lows, and our faith needs to remain constant in God within everything we face. No matter how hard things get God is our rock and our faith needs to be unshakable. Going all in with God is a journey but sometimes the hardest part is starting it.
“But now he has reconciled you by his physical body through his death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before him – if indeed you remain grounded and steadfast in the faith and are not shifted away from the hope of the gospel that you heard.”
Colossians 1:22-23 CSB
Going all in with God means loving others as God loves us. It is forgiving those who wrong us and being generous towards those in need. It is having a heart filled with kindness and compassion lifting others up rather than knocking them down. Encouraging, praising, supporting rather than insulting, cursing. The words we speak have power and God encourages us to speak life rather than death. He warns us in Proverbs 18:21 that we will reap what we speak. Let’s choose life and be more intentional in our words.
Going all in with God means doing all of this – the surrender, obedience, worship, loving others and spending time with God – even when we don’t feel like it.
It was never meant to be easy going all in with God, but it is supposed to be fulfilling and lead to a purposeful life filled with peace and joy. If we wanted easy, we shouldn’t have come to God. God made the path towards Him with intention the hard times teach us lessons we need to learn and prune us. They remind us to be grateful for what we have and to appreciate the good times better.
Do we want to be committed to God? Do we trust Him? Is God our priority? Such questions help us see if our hearts are in the right place to go all in with Him. If our answer is yes that is amazing, and we are already going all in. But if not then we have some choices to make and work to do.
God is fully committed to us, and He deserves nothing less than the same in return. For all He has done for us our commitment and love are the least we can give. In fact, it’s all we can give.
I know I want to go all in with God. He deserves nothing less than all my time, love and attention. I know I will fall short in many ways in my attempt, but I also know God loves us so much and appreciates our every attempt to love Him.
To go all in with God is to let go of personal desires and trust that God’s plan is better even if it’s not what we wanted. It means standing firm in faith regardless of circumstances and difficulty. Prayer, worship and bible study become a daily habit along with showing compassion, kindness and forgiveness to those around us.
Going all in with God is simple but we are so easily distracted and tempted by the world around us which makes it so hard. Let us pray to God for self-control in our temptations and discernment to make wise choices. Going all in with God isn’t a lonely journey, God is with us every step of the way. He is our strength in weakness; He convicts us when we go astray. He is our forgiver when we sin and our greatest supporter when we don’t. God wants the best for us and the best choice we can make is to go all in with Him.
Going all in with God leads to a transformed life, a fulfilling life. We must learn to act aligned with God’s Word and remember that He is with us at all times. A thought to keep in our minds is ‘how can I be with God in this moment?’
A word of warning I would give you comes from Revelation 3.
“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth.”
Revelation 3:15-16 CSB
God wants us to choose. We either go all in with Him or reject Him entirely. If we stay lukewarm, He will reject us. Trust me when I say we don’t want that to happen. I encourage you to choose to go all in with God and I have a feeling that if you ended up on this post that’s what you want anyway. I sincerely hope you choose to go all in with God, remember that you are not alone on this journey. Your brothers and sisters in Christ all walk with you and so does God. You are never alone.
To go all in with God you need to…
Surrender everything you know and have. Love God with all your heart, mind and soul. Build an unshakable faith in God. Love others before yourself but put God first. Be obedient in whatever God calls you to do and spend time with Him in prayer, worship and in His Word. Do these daily when you feel like it and when you don’t, when life is easy and when it’s hard. Create boundaries, lose friends, whatever is necessary and pleasing to God.
