We were designed with purpose. Not only to love God and people. Not only to live in fellowship and community with other believers but to contribute, to give.

KEY VERSE

CREATED TO SERVE GOD

We were created for ministry, to serve and help others. Whenever we serve or help in any way, we are fulfilling our purpose and serving God.

SAVED TO SERVE GOD

Being created with purpose gives our lives great value and significance. God gave us a job to do in the church and the wider world. We were saved to serve. Jesus’ blood bought our salvation (1 Corinthians 6:20). In return, we serve him out of joy and thanks. We owe him our lives.

Through salvation we’ve been forgiven, and our future is secure. What better reason to serve than to show our gratitude to the one who saved us?

Our service proves our salvation (1 John 3:14) because a saved heart wants to serve. We are healed from sin to help others. God blesses us so we can bless others. It is our purpose to serve.

CALLED TO SERVE GOD

Every Christian has a calling to serve (Ephesians 4:11-13). Some are called to serve on stage and others are called to be behind the scenes. All are equally important in God’s plan.

Each one of us has a role in God’s plan. A way of serving the church and the wider world. The church needs us to serve to function properly. In this world, too many people are content to be spectators. We were not called to sit back and do nothing; we were called to action and service.

COMMANDED TO SERVE GOD

We are not just called to serve, it’s a requirement. It’s not optional for us. Serving is at the heart of Christian life.

Did Jesus sit back and wait for his death to come? No, he gave his time and abilities to serve and help others. Becoming like him requires us to do the same. We must start thinking of others more than ourselves and we start by asking how we can help.

PREPARING FOR ETERNITY

One day we will meet God and will give an account of ourselves (Romans 14:12). What do we want to tell Him? Do we want to say we chose to spend our time and energy living how we wanted and face His wrath (Romans 2:8)? Or do we choose to follow His ways and do what He says?

If we choose ourselves, we are choosing existing over being fully alive. We are truly alive when we serve. Serving brings colour to life in a world that would choose to live without it.

Choosing God means denying ourselves.

SERVICE AND SIGNIFICANCE

Are you the type of person that wants to leave an impact? Do you want your life to have meaning? Serving is the road that leads to it.

When we serve, we please God. This brings eternal rewards for us in Heaven. It allows God to work through us.

How we live matters it has eternal consequences. It also means we must stop procrastinating and making excuses for why we can’t serve. It’s not optional for those who follow Jesus. Find a way to start serving today.
